The Meeting of History and Musical Tradition: Historical Folk Songs in Turkish and European Culture International Symposium
13.03.2024 / Congress / Symposium

Historical folk songs, which are the main subject of the symposium, are folk products that have been sung and continue to be sung in Anatolia and Europe. Events that deeply affected regional and national history have taken place in the memory of the people, and have been transformed into laments and folk songs over time and continued to be passed down from generation to generation. Migrations in Anatolia and the Balkans, wars, conquests, territorial losses, developments related to state administration, deaths of rulers and statesmen, rebellions, events that happened to regional and national heroes constitute the main theme of historical folk songs. In some historical folk songs, individual events are narrated and regional or national problems are touched upon. Historical folk songs are products of oral cultural heritage that contain historical and psycho-social information about the life of the people.
The main purpose of the symposium is to evaluate historical events that have an important place in Turkish history with the help of folk songs and laments. Thus, it is also aimed to reflect the perspective of the people on historical events. Through the symposium, it is aimed to add new ones to the limited number of studies on historical folk songs in the literature and to enrich the literature. The abstracts of the papers presented at the symposium will be published in printed and electronic form, and the full texts will be published as an electronic book.

The symposium will take place between March 13-14, 2024. The symposium will be held face-to-face and online. Wednesday, March 13 sessions will be held at Hacettepe University Beytepe Campus; Thursday, March 14, 2024 sessions will be held online via Zoom program.
