Faculty of Architecture Architecture Talks: World Women’s Day: “Art, Woman, and Place - 1”

Born in Ankara in 1943, art history researcher Prof. Dr. Jale Nejdet Erzen completed her high school education at the American Girls College (Robert College). She studied at the Department of Art History at Istanbul University from 1963 to 1964, and received her bachelor's and master's degrees in painting from the Art Center College of Design. She completed her Ph.D. in the Department of Art History and Restoration at Istanbul Technical University in 1981. Erzen served as a visiting lecturer at various institutions including the Art Center College of Design (1970-72), Gazi University Department of Applied Arts (1980-81), Hacettepe University Department of Art History (1984), Bilkent University Department of Interior Architecture (1987-90), and Mimar Sinan University (1991-93). She also served as a guest lecturer at the University of Bologna Dipartimento Arti Visive in 1999. Since 1974, she has been teaching the "Environmental Aesthetics" course at the Middle East Technical University (METU), which was the first course of its kind in the world. Erzen has been honored with several awards, including the Research Award from the American Research Institute (1978), the "Chevalier" Medal in the Arts from the French Ministry of Culture (1990), the "Best Art Critic of the Year" award at the Tüyap Art Fair (2000), the "High Academic Performance Award" from Middle East Technical University (2000), and the "Contribution to Architecture Award" from the Turkish Chamber of Architects (2008). She served as the president of the Sanart Aesthetics and Visual Culture Association from 1991 to 2011 and is a founding member of the Çağsav Foundation. Erzen served as the general secretary of the World Institute of Aesthetics from 1995 to 1998 and as the second president from 2010 to 2016. Additionally, Erzen has contributed to numerous exhibitions, articles, translations, symposium papers, and editorial works. Her paintings are held in many private and public collections in Turkey, France, the Netherlands, Canada, the United States, and Italy.
As part of International Women's Day, Prof. Dr. Erzen will deliver a speech online at the Hacettepe University Faculty of Architecture, aiming to draw attention to the integration of art with the architecture profession and the role of women in this integration through the concepts of art, women, and space. The conference will be conducted in Turkish.
