Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease characterized by inflammation, demyelination, and axonal loss in the central nervous system. Despite individual differences in the course of the disease and significant advances in treatment, MS remains one of the most common causes of neurological disability in young ages. Various genetic and environmental factors can contribute to the development and progression of the disease. While genetic predisposition explains only part of the risk, lifestyle and environmental factors are also important in explaining the risk of MS. A high-energy Western-style diet, saturated fatty acids, red meat, high sodium intake, and high consumption of added sugars are among the nutrition-related risk factors significant in the development of the disease. In this symposium, different dietary approaches applied to individuals with MS will be addressed, drawing attention to the current nutritional habits of our patients and focusing on the effects of the MIND (Mediterranean-DASH Diet Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay) diet on individuals with MS.
The symposium will be held by the Hacettepe University MS Research and Application Center. Thank you in advance for your participation and contributions.
