50 years under the light of science at Hacettepe: Prof. Dr. Olgun Güven

Prof. Dr. Olgun Güven received his B.S. (1970) and M.S. (1973) from Middle East Technical University as chemical engineer and obtained his Ph.D. from the Department of Chemistry of Hacettepe University. From 1971 to 2014 he worked as research assistant, instructor, Associate prof. and full professor at Hacettepe University. He is currently working as a visiting professor. He has been the supervisor of 35 Ph.D. (in Turkey) and 3 Ph.D. thesis abroad and 41 master of science. His more than 370 peer reviewed papers published abroad has received more than 12000 citations. He has been a Fullbright Research Associate at the University of Maryland (USA), 1982-1983. Visiting scientist at the Grenoble Nuclear Res. Center (France, 1982), Takasaki Radiation Chemistry Res Cent. (Japan, 2003), Oak Ridge  National Labs (USA, 2013). Director of NATO ASI “Crosslinking and Scission in Polymers” (1986, Antalya). Director of NATO Science for Stability Project “Preservation of Archaelogical Artifacts” (1987-1992). Director of ANAEM, TAEK from 1992-1996, established the first industrial Gamma-Irradiation facility in the country. Technical Officer in charge of promotion of radiation technology in 43 UN countries, IAEA-Vienna, (1996-2002). One of the editors of the journal “Radiation Physics and Chemistry” published in the USA. Organized and chaired the international symposia in İstanbul, Zakopane(PL), Shanghai (CN), Antalya, Angra dos Reis (BR), Cairns (AU), Jeju (RK). Contributor and editor of the books “Crosslinking and Scission in Polymers” (Holland), “Advanced Nanocomposites” (USA, and 3 book chapters. Owner of 3 international patents. Prof. Güven received the 1984 SEDAT SİMAVİ award in natural sciences, Hacetteepe University Senate award (1994) and Laureate of IMRP-2011, given by the International Irradiation Association, Montreal, Canada, 2011. Best teacher award of TL-IRMP Erasmus program (2014-2016). He is the founder of first Polymer Chemistry Division in a university undergraduate program in Turkey.

He has been lecturing Master and Ph.D. courses in the Graduate Programs of  Pavia Univ,. INCT, Trieste (ITALY), Al-Farabi, Satpaev Univ, (Almaty, Eurasian Univ. (Astana), kasetsrat Univ. (Bangkok, Thailand), Wroclaw Univ. (Wroclaw, Poland), Univ. Reims, (Reims, France),  and Military Engineering College, (Rio de Janeiro, Brasil).

The journal Radiation Physics and Chemistry will be celebrating the 75th birthday of Prof. Dr. Olgun Güven as a special issue in early 2022.
