Traditions are a set of values that emerge from human life experiences and, over time, transform into social identity, gaining a cultural character. Education plays a significant role in transferring this cultural accumulation from one generation to another; because the education system is a powerful mechanism that both ensures cultural continuity and has the capacity to transform social structure. In this context, music education stands out as one of the fundamental fields in preserving and sustaining cultural identity. In particular, the inclusion of folk songs in educational processes contributes to transmitting a society’s musical memory to future generations.
In this presentation, Prof. Dr. Emel Funda Türkmen will address the function of music culture in the process of cultural transmission, the values carried by music, the place of folk music in music education, and how this repertoire is positioned within educational programs. The presentation aims to evaluate the educational, cultural, and pedagogical significance of folk songs from a holistic perspective.
