Prof. Dr. Ruşen Keleş was born in 1932 in Trabzon. After completing his primary and secondary education in Trabzon, he enrolled in the Faculty of Political Science at Ankara University in 1950 and graduated in 1954. He also completed a degree at the Faculty of Law at Ankara University in 1955. In 1957, he was appointed as a research assistant to the Chair of Urbanism at the Faculty of Political Science, where he received the title of Doctor in 1961, Associate Professor in 1965, and Professor in 1971. Between 1971 and 1975, he served as the Dean of the Faculty and was appointed Director of the Institute of Housing and Urban Development in 1982. Throughout his academic career, he has produced pioneering work in the fields of urbanization, local governments, environmental policies, and public administration. He is the author of several foundational works, including Urbanization Policy, Decentralization and Politics, City and Political Participation, and Environment and Humanity. He has taught at numerous universities both in Turkey and abroad and has served as a consultant to international organizations such as UNESCO, the OECD, and the United Nations.
As part of World Environment Day, this talk—organized by Hacettepe University Faculty of Architecture—will be held online via Microsoft Teams on Monday, June 2, 2025, at 14:00 (GMT+3). Prof. Dr. Ruşen Keleş will share his insights under the title “Our Right to the Environment and Our Responsibilities Toward It,” addressing various dimensions of environmental rights along with our individual and collective responsibilities. As one of the pioneering scholars of urbanization, environmental policy, and the concept of public interest in Turkey, Prof. Keleş aims to shed light on current debates in environmental awareness and the responsibilities of local governance. The language of the event is Turkish.
